Why Is It “Cincy”?

Something that has bothered me ever since I’ve been abbreviating Cincinnati is that everyone seems to shorten it to "Cincy" with a "Y". I however, select to fight the good fight and spell it "Cinci". Why? Because that’s how the name of the city is spelled and the pronunciation is identical. Is there a fear that people will start running around thinking that the city’s name is "Cin-sai"? If so, couldn’t you butcher the word if it were spelled the other way?

It is foolish to spell it Cincy, it’s CINCInnati all the way!

Actually it’s probably spelled that way because traditionally in english I’s are not prounounced with the “ee” noise, therefore Cinci should be pronounced cin-sih. However, since everone started wanting to spell their child’s name “differently” and names like Cindy became Cindi (reflecting the way “I” is pronounced in languages like Spanish and Italian) I’d say spell it how you like.

Sometimes it’s shortened to Cinti. Try to wrap your head around that!
