Is It Possible to Make Good Things Suck More?

This morning at work I come in to a box full of emails from our IT department list serve. They’re all about the p599 instance on Oracle the huge corporate database server application. Now keep in mind they spent millions to have this system set up and they probably pay hundreds of thousands of dollars or more each year to keep it running. This application is supposed to be lightning fast, but somehow it takes hours to run simple reports. Anyway here’s the email synopsis:

Tues 6:59 AM – Slow performance and hung sessions
Tues 7:48 AM – EBS Instance P599 is now available to Users.
Tues 4:36 PM – All Desktop users need to use p599_disco for connecting to p599(production) IMMEDIATELY
Tues 5:25 PM – CORRECTION: Production Discoverer Users(Discoverer DESKTOP ONLY)
Tues 5:27 PM – Slow performance , hung sessions and Login issues
Tues 6:31 PM – Instance P599 is now available
Weds 4:49 AM – Slow performance and hung sessions
Weds 5:40 AM – EBS Instance P599 is now available to Users.

I like how just about every problem was resolved in 49 minutes EXACTLY. It’s like that’s the cycle time to reboot the machines or something routine that they do when ever there’s problems. I still say that it is redonkulous that there is any outage on a system that costs so much. There should be redundancy all over the place for that price.
